Florida Southern College provides many opportunities on Lake Hollingsworth so that students can have fun in the water and sun.
The waterfront program is open seven days a week from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. for FSC student, faculty and staff use. The program has four single kayaks, two double kayaks, one sailboat and one paddle boat available for those interested in going out on the lake.
Lounge chairs can also be checked out for use on the dock. An FSC ID card is required to check out all equipment.
The Cardboard Regatta is a new event this semester sponsored by the Wellness Center. Michelle Thompson, the associate director of the wellness program, said that the regatta is an out and back race.
Preregistered teams of four must construct a boat using only cardboard, a box cutter and duct tape within a time limit of about two hours. All materials will be provided the day of the race.
Once time is up, one team member must get in the boat and paddle out and around a buoy. The first team back in a floating boat wins.
The regatta will take place Sept. 6 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., with the race beginning at 4 p.m.
Another big event on the lake are the waterski clinics.
Thompson said that the clinics are for those who want to "learn to ski, learn to ski better or just have fun."
The first clinic took place on Sept. 3, and the next two clinics of the semester will take place on Oct. 22 and Nov. 5 from 8 a.m to 5 p.m.
Those interested must preregister with ski coach and waterfront coordinator Roger Skalko and pay either $10 for a daily membership or $40 for a yearly membership to USA Water Ski. The money will cover insurance and other skiing fees. An additional $5 is required for each ski set, which lasts about 15 minutes.
Registered participants must sign up for a time slot before the day begins.
For more information on the ski clinics, Thompson suggested joining the FSC water ski club Facebook group. Events will be posted in the group.
