Freshmen were not the only new faces to the Florida Southern College campus this semester. There are also some new professors to the campus. The education, nursing, English, history, music and modern language departments have welcomed some new professors to their faculty.
In the education department, there is a new education professor, Dr. Bernardo Blanco, as well as two new elementary education professors, Dr. Shelly Huggins and Dr. Lourdes Figueroa. Dr. Tracey Tedder was welcomed by the department as a professor and the chair of the division of education.
FSC junior Kaylee Mangold, who is majoring in elementary education, said that the new professors seem nice. Mangold went on to say that she currently has Blanco for two classes.
"He is bilingual, teaching both ESOL and regular English classes," Mangold said. "He is very committed and wants to help future ESOL teachers so they will be better prepared."
Blanco, originally from Costa Rica, has been teaching for more then 25 years, both in the United States and in Costa Rica. He teaches applied linguistics and ESOL classes, and said he is enjoying cultural and research diversity.
"I find that FSC has a great environment and friendly people. The architecture is beautiful and amazes me," he said. "It's great for work and study. I have no doubt why it's on the list for one of the best colleges and universities."
Dr. Patricia Suppes, new to the modern languages department, also praised the college.
"I'm glad to be here and like it here. My colleagues are great and the students are open to and interested in
learning," she said.
Suppes added that she is very into student participation and so her students are required to do a lot of talking, which she saif she finds helps in the long run in developing better ideas and opinions instead of just impressions.
"There are so many wonderful initiatives. It's a good time to be here. There are a lot of changes going on," she said.
